To mark his 50th and wife Jennifer's 40th birthdays, Daddy's OClub basketball friend Mike Cerchiai threw the best party ever at San Francisco's famous cabaret nightclub - Bimbo's.  Mommy & Daddy were special guests and were among a select few to close the place at 3am.  Beyond the standard OC hoops teammates & wives, other special guests included Robin Williams and tennis star/coach Brad Gilbert.  A hefty sitter fee and a stumbling sitter-walk-home through the Lower Haight closed out the latest night since kid(s) arrived.

Ferry ride to Sausalito Art Festival

The Matthews and Dellingers rallied for a beautiful Labor Day on the bay and in Sausalito. The kids munched fish&chips, devoured ice cream, and danced up a storm with a bunch of hippies to some classic Grateful Dead cover tunes. And while all that was gong on, the parents managed to slam back a few mimosas and beers.

Our "Princess" is 2!

The big birthday(s) party for Bruce & Megan is today.  60+ SF parents & kids on Labor Day "staycation" will invade Golden Gate Park.

Well, there is no doubt that Megan has been going through a long mommy attachment phase... something like 24-months or so, and counting. 

Tonight it was never more apparent.  After a longer-than-average bedtime ritual with Megan, Helen had this short little story to tell:

After turning my back (to play dead) to see if she would calm down and go to sleep, Megan said, "I want my stuff!" -- pause -- "I want my arm."

That would be Helen's arm.   :-/

Bruce visits his Nova Scotia VIPs

Almost 4 and already an experienced coast-to-coast traveler, Bruce decided it was high time he rolled into Halifax and Chester to hang with his cousins Isabelle and Jack. It was also overdue to pay his good buddies James Wheelock and Sophia Hewitt a visit. He was very gracious in allowing Daddy to come along.

The following pretty much sums up Bruce's 8-day Nova Scotia tour.

So a recent bathroom-related q&a with Bruce went pretty much exactly like this... Right afterwards I recorded the following on my blackberry to ensure accuracy and avoid any mis-quoting.

B: daddy, I'm peepeeing
D: do u want to go potty?
B: yeah
D: are you still peepeeing?
B: no its in my bum; in my poopoo bum
D: so we need to change then?
B: yeah
------ pants off, diaper off
B: my peepee come out of there? My weewee?
D: yes, its also called your penis
B: panis? Weewee panis? And BALLS?
------ bruce grabs his balls full on.
D: yeah bruce, those are your balls
B: daddy has balls too?
D: thats right Bruce
B: megan have balls? mommy have balls?
D: no, just boys have balls bruce
B: just BIG BOYS have balls, BIG BALLS. Basketball balls? Balls balls! Big balls boys. Balls

Tough Week for Terrible-Two Toddler

Friday afternoon – Bruce “pink-slipped” at Daycare due to angry rash around mouth. Daddy must take Bruce to doctor before bringing him back to daycare.

Saturday morning – Mommy takes Bruce for a haircut! Terrified of large female Russian barber with massive moles on her face, Bruce cries the entire time. Saturday afternoon – Daddy buys Bruce new (white) shoes! Bruce loves white shoes. This should be a good thing… we’ll get back to this later. Saturday night – NIGHTMARES of large female Russian barber. Soother recently retired – so up most of night.

Sunday morning – Bruce awakes (at 5am) with cold & cough symptoms. Tantrum until Daddy allows him to watch “Elephants” (Baby Einstein video about animals). Sunday night – Dinner out at friends. After his 10th lap (at increasing velocity) around the dinner table, Bruce and brass balcony door handle collide. Door handle wins; Bruce left with golf-ball-sized contusion on right side of head.

Monday morning – Dad attempts to “load” both kids into car by himself. Turns back on Bruce for 5 seconds; Bruce climbs stairs; trips and tumbles all the way to the bottom. Bruises everywhere. Monday afternoon – Doctor visit for rash. Bruce is terrified of his pediatrician. After a 1-hour wait, he cries the entire time and at record decibel levels when the doctor searches for “birdies in his ears” (thankfully, no ear infection). 5-day antibiotic prescription for bacterial skin infection costs daddy $72 (Insurance paid $22 ???!!!) Monday night – Evening diaper change reveals horrendous diaper rash and chafing on Bruce’s wiener. Up all night grabbing & scratching face, crotch & butt.

Tuesday morning – Daddy yells at Daycare supervisor for “her inability to provide the simplest basic of care for his son.” The diaper rash thing has been a recurring issue. Bruce bears witness and cries inconsolably when Daddy leaves for work. Tuesday night – BLISTERS from new white shoes. Bruce scratches face, crotch, butt, and toes all night long while crying loudly. Upstairs neighbors start stomping on floor.

Wednesday night – Same as Tuesday night, but with worsening cold symptoms. Neighbors stomp on floor some more. Daddy phones them and suggests ear plugs.

Thursday afternoon – Daddy picks up Bruce at daycare, and learns of latest BITING ATTACK. Daddy checks out Bruce and observes what looks like a big lipstick smooch on his left cheek.

Friday morning – After another sleepless night for all – add to cold symptoms a fever. Back to the doctor we go. Hopefully no “birdies I his ears”.

The good news is that Megan has been smiling all week long…

The nature of holiday fun for these 3 families has definitely changed over the past couple years. Ainsely, Caleb and Bruce show Audrey and Megan (and their parents!) how to truly "party"... during Thanksgiving weekend at the Lewis retreat in Carmel's Santa Lucia Nature Preserve.
